OUR

COMMUNITY PARTNERS

"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of it's members."

Coretta Scott King

PTs

PT's Tavern and Golden Entertainment have been longtime supporters of our community. To date, they have contributed over $36,392.74 in cash, copy machines, printers, and more school supplies than even we can count (and we are pretty good at counting).

Their contributions help us focus on what matters most, educating our students and preparing them for what's ahead. The last two school years have been an extremely difficult time for the students and faculty at Doris Hancock. The pandemic has presented new challenges that no one saw coming. Suddenly, students had to stay home and we had to provide Chromebooks, iPads, books, pencils and pens, markers, notebooks and hundreds of thousands of pages of classwork and information packets. While this is a big challenge for any K-12 institution, our troubles where lessened by the contributions PT's has made to our school.

Many families where out and still are out of work. Money donated from PT's went directly into the backpacks of students. That's money families didn't have to spend, so that they could focus on the health and wellbeing of their families. Money they could spend on things like groceries, or utilities. None of this would have been possible without the direct support of who we are proud to say is our greatest community partner, PT's.

On behalf of all of our students and faculty, Thank you PT's Taverns. We know your dedicated staff members worked hard to raise money and purchase supplies for our school! Thank you for helping us "Soar High on the Wings of Excellence".

Here at Doris Hancock, we cherish these vital relationships with community partners like PT's. We wanted to do something special to honor their charitable contribution in a way that was special for them and us.

Flag Day, 2021

We take pride in the presentation of our staff, and school. It came to our attention that our American flag, flown proudly over our school, needed to be replaced. We decided that we would hold a private retirement of our flag on Monday June 14th 2021, flag day. Today, Flag Day is celebrated with parades, essay contests, ceremonies, and picnics sponsored by veterans' groups, schools, and groups like the National Flag Day foundation whose goal is to preserve the traditions, history, pride, and respect that are due the nation's symbol, Old Glory.

The retirement process consisted of:

  1. Inspecting and trimming loose threads

  2. Washing the flag

  3. Cutting the flag

    • The flag is separated into smaller parts consisting of the union (blue area), individual stripes, and individual stars. This makes the next step cleaner and easier.

  4. Cremating the flag remains

    • All parts of the flag, less the stars, are cremated in a behind closed door ceremony so as to preserve dignity and respect.

We made the decision to retire the flag but keep the stars as gifts for those we wish to honor and as tokens of appreciation with PT's being the very first recipient of one of our stars. This way, something precious to us that flew from sunrise to sunset for several years, can proudly continue to fly in a place where it will be cared for and appreciated. This is just one small way we can thank our partners, and community members for their important contributions to our school.

At the time of writing this, PT's Taverns, US Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto, and former Principal Christie McKenzie are the first to receive this exclusive honor.

Again, thank you PT's for all that you have done for our school.

Respectfully,

The students and faculty of Doris Hancock Elementary School

The Vegas Golden Knights Foundation are proud supporters of Doris Hancock Elementary School. Recently, they supported our students and families with donations of school supplies for every single student and teacher at our school! And to personally ensure our teachers got what they needed, the Vegas Golden Knights sent #14, Nicolas Hague to help with handing out supplies.

On behalf of our students and teachers, thank you to the Vegas Golden Knights Foundation for being one of our amazing community partners!
