"The greatness of a community is most accurately measured by the compassionate actions of it's members."

Coretta Scott King

PT's Tavern and Golden Entertainment have been longtime supporters of our community. To date, they have contributed over $36,392.74 in cash, copy machines, printers, and more school supplies than even we can count (and we are pretty good at counting).

Their contributions help us focus on what matters most, educating our students and preparing them for what's ahead. The last two school years have been an extremely difficult time for the students and faculty at Doris Hancock. The pandemic has presented new challenges that no one saw coming. Suddenly, students had to stay home and we had to provide Chromebooks, iPads, books, pencils and pens, markers, notebooks and hundreds of thousands of pages of classwork and information packets. While this is a big challenge for any K-12 institution, our troubles where lessened by the contributions PT's has made to our school.

Many families where out and still are out of work. Money donated from PT's went directly into the backpacks of students. That's money families didn't have to spend, so that they could focus on the health and wellbeing of their families. Money they could spend on things like groceries, or utilities. None of this would have been possible without the direct support of who we are proud to say is our greatest community partner, PT's.

On behalf of all of our students and faculty, Thank you PT's Taverns. We know your dedicated staff members worked hard to raise money and purchase supplies for our school! Thank you for helping us "Soar High on the Wings of Excellence".

Here at Doris Hancock, we cherish these vital relationships with community partners like PT's. We wanted to do something special to honor their charitable contribution in a way that was special for them and us.

Flag Day, 2021

We take pride in the presentation of our staff, and school. It came to our attention that our American flag, flown proudly over our school, needed to be replaced. We decided that we would hold a private retirement of our flag on Monday June 14th 2021, flag day. Today, Flag Day is celebrated with parades, essay contests, ceremonies, and picnics sponsored by veterans' groups, schools, and groups like the National Flag Day foundation whose goal is to preserve the traditions, history, pride, and respect that are due the nation's symbol, Old Glory.

The retirement process consisted of:

  1. Inspecting and trimming loose threads

  2. Washing the flag

  3. Cutting the flag

    • The flag is separated into smaller parts consisting of the union (blue area), individual stripes, and individual stars. This makes the next step cleaner and easier.

  4. Cremating the flag remains

    • All parts of the flag, less the stars, are cremated in a behind closed door ceremony so as to preserve dignity and respect.

We made the decision to retire the flag but keep the stars as gifts for those we wish to honor and as tokens of appreciation with PT's being the very first recipient of one of our stars. This way, something precious to us that flew from sunrise to sunset for several years, can proudly continue to fly in a place where it will be cared for and appreciated. This is just one small way we can thank our partners, and community members for their important contributions to our school.

At the time of writing this, PT's Taverns, US Senator Catherine Cortez-Masto, and former Principal Christie McKenzie are the first to receive this exclusive honor.

Again, thank you PT's for all that you have done for our school.

Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department

The Las Vegas Metropolitan Police Department has been a strong supporter of our Doris Hancock community and most recently donated school supplies, notebooks, socks, and much needed hand sanitizer to ensure the safety of our staff and students at the start of the 2020-2021 school year. We are very grateful to them and offer our thanks and support in this difficult time.

US Senator Catherine Cortez Masto

Senator Cortez Masto is currently serving as one of the two US Senators representing Nevada. Her efforts in recognizing the mental health crisis currently impacting students in Nevada will greatly benefit not only our students, but all students in our state. Specifically, Senator Cortez Masto worked to ensure that money in the American rescue plan, specifically over $800 million, would go to CCSD.

In a press conference outside of our school she said, “I have heard from Nevadans, from children, from parents, our teachers about the challenges of educating our kids in the middle of a pandemic. I am focused on making sure that our kids can heal from this pandemic which has taken a huge toll on them...”.

At Doris Hancock we have seen the challenges students face first hand, which is why we greatly appreciate any attention brought to the health and wellness of students, especially the subject of mental health. We congratulate and thank Senator Cortez Masto for her accomplishments and hard work.

Fun fact, did you know Senator Cortez Masto is a former Doris Hancock student? Senator Cortez Masto not only grew up in Las Vegas, Nevada, but attended kindergarten at our amazing school. She serves as a perfect example to our students that you can be anything if you work hard and follow your dreams. Recently, we had the honor of having her as a participant in our annual career day. Watch the interview below. Thank you Senator Catherine Cortez Masto for all that you have done, and continue to do for our students!

Trinity United Methodist Church has become a valued partner of Doris Hancock Elementary School over the years – providing students with school supplies, backpacks and other essentials such as clothing.

Through their outreach group, The Society of St. Stephen, they have donated hundreds of backpacks to our most in-need students.

As if that was not generous enough, their members, through the Angel Tree program, sponsored several of our students by providing Christmas gifts to those who would not normally receive one.

Students are excited to have backpacks to carry their homework and school supplies for learning to and from school. This not only helps with student achievement but also helps build the bridge with our community. We appreciate all they have done for our students

From our students and staff, Thank you Trinity United Methodist Church for your endless generosity!

This year, our friend's at Unify Financial Credit Union stepped up big!

One local branch, using their own funds, purchased a ton of school supplies!

Their generous donation of over 20,000 sheets of copy paper, 5,000 sheets of loose-leaf paper, folders, binders, staplers and much more are just what we needed at this time of the year.

This donation supplements the reduction in CCSD's budget and may get us through the year!

From our students and staff, Thank you Unify Financial Credit Union!
